New storage facility could soon be built in the city

Residents living near 92 Street in Grande Prairie may soon see something different in their neighbourhood. City Council has agreed that a storage facility made with shipping containers can be built in the area. City Senior Planner Reed Des Roches says before it was approved, council added few rules the facility owner would have to follow moving forward.

“They added an amendment which was essentially a stipulation so that the development permit would include requirements restricting hours of operation, the appearance of the sea-cans and the types of materials that can be stored at the facility.”

The property at 10715 92 Street currently houses an RV storage facility. Des Roches says the city was hesitant to support the project at first as they don’t normally allow storage facilities to be built in residential neighbourhoods or allow shipping containers to be used as structures.

“In this case, there was already an outdoor storage use on the site. The use was similar in nature so the change wouldn’t have a real impact on adjacent property owners because it’s similar to what’s already going on.”

Des Roches says he has heard concerns from members of the Hillside Neighbourhood Association about things like traffic and looks but none from neighbours located directly next to the property.

While council has said that a storage facility can be put on the property, nothing can be built until the proper permits are given. De Roches says that process could take at least two weeks or longer to be approved.
