Grande Cache deciding town’s future

The next two days will determine the future of Grande Cache. Residents are voting today and tomorrow on whether or not the town should become a hamlet of the Municipal District of Greenview.

Town council has endorsed dissolving, following a report into the health of the community. It found that more than $80 million worth of repairs, upgrades, and new construction is needed, and the town already can’t cover the vast majority of its operational and capital costs.

The switch from being a town to hamlet will only happen with the approval of residents. If given the green light, the current council and two town representatives would govern it until the 2021 municipal election.

The polls will be open at the Métis Nations Centre from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 12 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Residents will need to show proof of ID and address.
