Parents looking for a new sport for their kids are being encouraged to try ringette. The Peace Country Ringette club will be hosting a free event on September 22 called Come Try Ringette to try and get more children interested in the sport. Organizer Amanda Yu says it’s a great sport for children because it teaches them how to be part of a team.
“It’s very team oriented. You can’t skate with the ring from one end to the other so you’re not gonna have that superstar type player…You just get the team atmosphere and make new friends and all that fun stuff.”
Ringette is a fairly new sport to the area. This is only the second year the club has been running leagues for adults and youth. Yu says the sport was brought here by a group of local mothers.
“A group of ladies who played the sport and we’re looking to find a different sport for their kids to play in, got together and basically brought ringette back to the Peace Country.”
Last year the club had 20 players in their adult league and 12 in their youth league. Yu says they are hoping numbers will increase this year and encourages everyone interested, male or female, to come and try the sport.
“We’re hoping to grow this year and split the youth into two groups. Ringette is also known as a female dominated sport but we also welcome the males to come out and play.”
The Come Try Ringette event will be held on Saturday at the Crosslink County Sportsplex at 10 a.m. To find out more or to register for this year’s season, visit their website or facebook page.
