Veterans way unveiled at First Responders Day celebration

101 Avenue in Grande Prairie has gotten its new name. Signs for Veterans Way went up on September 15th at an event at the legion celebrating First Responders Day. Legion donor wall committee chairperson Dan Christenson says the road was renamed as a way to honour those who have served.

“Veterans way is acknowledging that we’ve had people that fight for our freedom and still are whether it’s the RCMP or the soldiers. It’s not necessarily just the World War II veterans; it’s anybody that’s been in the service.”

On Saturday, members from the RCMP, STARS, EMS, the Grande Prairie Fire Department and QEII Hospital triage unit were at the legion for First Responders Day, talking to the public and doing demonstrations. Christenson says it was important to hold the day at the legion to let residents know who they are and what they do as well.

“We’ve talked to people even today that have been in town for years and they don’t know there’s even a legion in town. We’re trying to bring awareness to the legion as well.”

Veterans Way will run between 98 Street and 102 Street. The name will not officially replace the street’s current name and there will be no changes to the addresses on the street.
