This year’s smile cookie campaign is off to a good start. A local business owner has purchased 20,000 cookies which he plans to deliver to every student in the Grande Prairie area over the next four days.
Car dealership owner Sean Sargent says it was important for him to give back to the community and wants to show local students that they can do the same.
“This year, I thought why not give every single kid in Grande Prairie a smile cookie? At the end of the day they get a cookie, it feels good, it’s a donation…and maybe that’ll endeavour them to help things out in the future as well.”
The campaign is in its seventh year and all money raised will go towards items needed for the new pediatric ward at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. Hospital Foundation Senior Development Officer Dawn Miller is hoping to raise close to $50,000 in donations this year and says they are getting closer to that goal with the help of Sargent’s donation.
“We usually do around 32,000-38,000 dollars in the city alone so we’re hoping to hit 50,000 this year…We’re up to like 38,000 cookies and we’re hoping to get to 50 especially with Sean’s large donation.”
The cookies will be available to the public from September 17-23. They are $1 each and can be purchased at every Tim Hortons in the city.
