Spirit River native wins big at CCMAs

Singer/songwriter and Spirit River native Aaron Goodvin is now an award winner. He took home a Canadian Country Music Award for Songwriter of the Year for his song Lonely Drum at Sunday night’s awards show. Goodvin says the win is a dream come true.

“It’s one thing that I think you always hope happens as a young Alberta boy growing up trying to write the best music you can so when they called my name… I got up and threw my hat a couple times, it was awesome.”

Goodvin was born in Spirit River, A.B. and lived in the Peace Country for 17 years. Growing up he took voice and guitar lessons in Grande Prairie and says his first ever live performance also took place in the city.

“My first performance was at the Grande Prairie Mall. I believe I was 11 or 12. I realized then that I just loved being on stage and that was where I felt most at home.”

Goodvin tried for year’s to break into the business was in a singing competition when he was 22 where he was told he might make it as a songwriter but not as a singer. Goodvin says the win for a song he wrote and performed has proven he is capable of doing both.

“It’s just funny how you can go against all odds and focus more on what you think then what other people think of you. I always believed I was an artist and I guess I was right.”

It’ll be a busy next few months for Goodvin who is releasing his next single this Friday. He will also be working on a new album in October and will continue touring for the rest of the year playing as many shows as he can.
