Weather delays opening of local attraction

A local corn maze in the city will remain closed until further notice. The nine-acre corn maze at Country Roads RV Park is usually open by the first or second week of August but due to the wet weather this year, they are still closed.

Park Manager Jason Halwa says this is the first year they haven’t been able to open because of the weather.

“In all the 13,14,15 years that we’ve done this, I think this is the first year where I’ve haven’t been able to get out there because of moisture.”

Halwa says that while the rain and heat they experienced over the summer has been great for the corn there hasn’t been enough time in between storms to work.

“All the rain we’ve been getting has been kind of a double-edged sword. It’s been such a great growing season…but just not enough time to dry things up and be able to go out there and cut the corn into the designs that we do.”

On top of all the rain they are dealing with, this week’s forecast is calling for a possible five to ten centimetres of snow on Wednesday. Halwa says that if it does snow there’s not much he can do but wait.

“At one point somebody said snow and I sure hope that doesn’t happen. It’s just been one of those years and you can fight it all you want but mother natures gonna do what mother nature wants.”

If the weather improves in the next few weeks, Halwa says he will open for a shortened season even if that season only lasts a week.
