Impending snow prompts special weather statement

Environment Canada is doubling down on its forecast for snow in Grande Prairie. A special weather statement has been issued for the County of Grande Prairie near Grande Prairie and Wembley, as well as much of the Municipal District of Greenview.

Snow is expected in the middle of the week, as a cool airmass moves from the Northwest Territories into west-central Alberta. That’s supposed to happen on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing precipitation that will likely fall as snow between Grande Prairie and Jasper on Wednesday.

Somewhere between five and 10 centimetres of heavy, wet snow is predicted, but some areas could get more than 10 centimetres. It is expected to move south through the day and evening Wednesday and could reach as far as Banff by Thursday morning.

A snowfall warning has not been issued at this point but could be closer to the time. If Grande Prairie gets snow, it will be the first time it has fallen in September in four years.
