Brenda Lucki sworn in as RCMP Commissioner

Brenda Lucki has officially been sworn in as the 24th RCMP Commissioner. Lucki previously served in Grande Prairie as district commander of the RCMP’s Western Alberta District from 2013 to 2016 and is now Canada’s first female RCMP commissioner.

A change of command ceremony was held Thursday at the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. Lucki took up the post in April, but the ceremony is a symbolic passing of the torch from former commissioner Bob Paulson.

“Becoming Commissioner at this time in history is a tremendous honour and privilege,” Lucki said. “Guided by my mandate letter, we are embarking on a period of modernization and innovation. The opportunities and expectations for the RCMP are clear, and together, we are ready to take on the challenge.”

Lucki chose the RCMP’s Depot division for her swearing in, saying it holds a special significance to her and all Mounties who started their careers there. Before her appointment, she was the Commanding Officer of the training academy.
