Wapiti Nordic Ski Club area closed due to grizzly

The area around the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club has been closed due to an aggressive grizzly bear. Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement says a hiker on the ski trails south of Grande Prairie came across the animal around noon on Monday, September 3rd.

The hiker used bear spray, but the grizzly was unphased and reportedly followed the hiker for about 700 metres while they got out of the area. Fish and wildlife officers have since placed traps.

The area closed off is from south of Township Road 704, east of Range Road 63, west of Highway 40, and north of the Wapiti River. Signs and tape have been put in the two main parking areas and at the south trailheads on Township Road 704.

Any bear activity in the area around the closure should be reported to 1-800-642-3800.
