Drivers reminded to slow down as children return to school

Drivers in the city are being reminded that school will soon be back in session. Enforcement Services officers will be out monitoring school zones starting Tuesday.

Enforcement Services Program Manager Kelly Kokesch says it’s important for drivers to be aware of their surroundings because children starting school for the first time may not know about the safety laws.

“Be aware that there are new students going to these schools and they may not be fully versed in the pedestrian or traffic routes so be very careful travelling around school zones because we don’t want any one to get hurt.”

Officers will be out in full force monitoring traffic speeds in school zones and writing tickets. Every year a high number of tickets are given out around this time and Kokesch expects nothing different this year.

“I’m expecting that we will have a high volume of violations in school zones and it varies from speed to parking to encroaching on sidewalks. Our goal is really to get people to slow down and to practice safe driving around schools.”

Kokesch says drivers should make sure they are slowing down, avoiding distractions while driving and make sure they are aware of their surroundings, especially in parking lots. He also says it’s important for parents to lead by example when taking their children to school.

“We’re really encouraging parents to make sure they use those crosswalks and safe ways to cross roads because we don’t want to encourage unsafe pedestrian practices.”

Starting on September 4, all school zones will be 30 kilometres from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise posted.
