The risk of a wildfire sparking in the Grande Prairie Forest Area has decreased along with the temperature. The wildfire danger for the region is now moderate.
A fire advisory was issued for both the forest area and County of Grande Prairie on August 7th. Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke says it will stay in place despite the reduced risk.
“Every precaution is needed to ensure no new wildfires are started. Recent winds and warmer conditions have [increased] the potential for wildfire events in the area. Please take extra caution when working or recreating in the area.”
Anyone who spots smoke in a forested area is asked to call 310-FIRE. People who light campfires are also urged to make sure they are fully extinguished.
The special air quality statement for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region has ended. Environment Canada says smoke from B.C. wildfires will likely dissipate as far south as the Edmonton Region Thursday evening.
It’s expected to linger until Friday in southern parts of the province. After several days of poor air quality, the health index in Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge and Rycroft is now low.
