JDA Raceway turning purple for pancreatic cancer awareness

Evergreen Park will go purple Sunday to wrap up the summer horse racing season. The Mr. Mike’s Paint The Park Purple Race for the Cure will take place at the J.D.A. Raceway for the third year in a row.

Mr. Mike’s took over the pancreatic cancer awareness-raising fundraiser in 2016, after the park was painted pink for breast cancer two years prior. Pancreatic cancer is considered the fourth deadliest cancer in North America.

The August 26th event will include a silent auction and frisbee toss, on top of the six furlong race slated for 4:55 p.m. It has a purse of $8,500 and is open to horses that started at $6,250 or less this season or have had two starts on a B track.

The fundraising race will mark the end of pari-mutuel horse racing at Evergreen Park’s for 2018. Guests are encouraged to wear purple.

Horse racing fans will also be paying attention to the Canadian Derby Saturday in Edmonton. Evergreen Park Marketing & Sponsorship Manager Don Moon says two of the nine horses in the field are co-owned by Grande Prairie residents and four took part in the Alberta Derby at the local raceway earlier this month.
