Residents and visitors to the area may have noticed something a little different about two of the crosswalks in downtown Grande Prairie. City Representative Monty Haughian says the city’s two new zipper crosswalks add a unique look to downtown.
“This is a different attraction and a different look for the downtown core.”
The two zippers are located on 101 Avenue between 100 Street and 101 Street and are made of plastic instead of being painted on. Haughian says he was approached by the city’s Downtown Association with a few different design options but went with a zipper design in the end.
“The Downtown Association presented us with about 10 different options and some of them were quite intricate. We are a northern city and everything we do has to be maintained in the winter so we went with the simplest thing we could while still giving it an interesting look.”
The project cost a total of $24,000 for both crosswalks and was a part of the Downtown Rehabilitation Project’s budget for phase one and two.
The city has yet to decide whether they will do the same thing on 100 Avenue when it is completed later this year.
