Stretch of 101 Avenue to be renamed Veterans Way

A portion of 101 Avenue will soon have an honourary new name. City council has approved Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54’s request to change the name of the road outside the legion to Veterans Way in honour of those who have served.

Legion Project Coordinator Barry Lazoruk previously said that he hopes the name change would be used as a way for people to remember veterans all year long.

“A lot of people don’t remember veterans other than on November 11th and I thought if we decided to approach the city to rename 101 Avenue – not change the address, just rename it as Veterans Way – it would be an educational process so that people would remember veterans 365 days a year.”

Veterans Way will run between 98 Street and 102 Street. The new name will not replace the street’s current name and there will be no changes to the addresses on the street.

Lazoruk says local company Rentco has stepped up to fund the project which should cost around $2,500. He hopes to have the signs up by September 15th in honour of First Responders Appreciation Day.
