Grande Prairie breaks 40 year old rainfall record

Another rainfall record has unofficially been set in Grande Prairie. According to Environment Canada, a total of 27.4 millimetres fell at the airport on Sunday, besting the previous August 12th record of 23.6 millimetres set 40 years ago in 1978.

The rain forced the cancellation of the horse racing at Evergreen Park, which is considered a rare occurrence, but follows what was believed to be the first-ever cancellation of two consecutive days of racing in July. All of the City and County of Grande Prairie’s baseball diamonds were also shut down for the day.

Earlier this summer, the city saw three record days of rainfall in a row, coinciding with the Alberta Summer Games.
