Donut designed by local athlete helps raise $120K

An athlete from Grande Prairie has helped raise more than $120,000 for Special Olympics Canada. 14-year-old Savannah Lussier was chosen out of 84 Special Olympics athletes across the country to design a Tim Hortons donut.

The Honey Cruller with chocolate fondant and red and white sprinkles, which are the Special Olympics colours, was sold for one day only on July 21st. That’s the Global Day of Inclusion, which celebrates the success and contribution of people with disabilities.

Savannah has Down Syndrome and competes provincially with Special Olympics Alberta. Her mother Jennifer Melom says it was an amazing experience to be a part of the awareness day.

“Savannah and I couldn’t have asked for anything better, as for the love and support which was shown. The Day of Inclusion means so much to the Special Olympics community across the country, and on July 21st it showed! From here we just keep moving forward and bringing awareness every day.”

In total, 78,000 of Savannah’s donuts were eaten, and the $120,000 raised will go towards Special Olympics programs across Canada. As part of her experience, she travelled to Toronto to meet and film a video with TSN’s Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole.
