Local heritage on display Monday

Heritage Day will be celebrated in two locations in Grande Prairie on Monday. Program and Events Manager for the City Carla Wells hopes they will draw large crowds.

“It’s an afternoon of entertainment and getting to meet new and exciting people and view different cultures and dances; things that maybe we wouldn’t see on a regular basis.”

Events start at the Muskoseepi Park Amphitheatre at 11 a.m featuring cultural music and dance performances, multicultural displays and local food vendors. Then at 12 p.m. things will get going at the Grande Prairie Museum and Heritage Village where there will be storytellers, old-fashioned games, and demonstrations in activities like blacksmithing and candle making.

The Centre for Newcomers will also be hosting a Kermesse, which is a cultural exchange where art, clothing and lifestyle items from multicultural backgrounds will be on display. Wells wants people to have the opportunity to try something new.

“We’re just hoping people have a chance to try a new experience like drumming or making candles. I just want people to see that there’s lots of diversity within Grande Prairie.”

The event runs until 4 p.m. at both locations. For more information visit the City’s website.
