Bear Creek Pool won’t open mid-August

The Bear Creek Pool will no longer be open by mid-August. That was the latest date the City of Grande Prairie had given, but it now says there have been unspecified construction delays that mean that won’t be possible.

“We know that this is a disappointment to the community and share your eagerness to have this facility available for public use,” City administration says in a statement. “We will keep the community updated on our progress and on a future opening date once the construction and commissioning process is complete.”

Once construction is done, the City will still need to go through testing and commissioning. Staff and lifeguards also need to be trained.

Work to reopen the outdoor pool in Muskoseepi Park began last year after city council approved spending $4.5 million on renovations and upgrades. Once open, the facility will include a tot’s pool with splash park features, a zero entry beach area, Spanish steps, a games area, and a three loop waterslide.

The pool was originally built in 1962, but was closed in 2013 when a large crack was noticed in the structure. The opening date has been pushed back several times, and at this point it’s unclear whether it will still open as planned in 2018.

At last report the project was said to be within a $5 million budget. Whether that has changed has also not been released.
