Peace country smashes rainfall records

A rainfall record was unofficially set Friday in Grande Prairie. 19 millimetres fell in the city, besting the previous July 20th record of 12.4 millimetres set in 1983.

July 19th also saw heavy rainfall, although not enough to beat that day’s record. A total of 11 millimetres was recorded at the Grande Prairie Airport, while the most ever was 13.2 millimetres in 2004.

Those numbers pale in comparison to the rainfall in Peace River. 51.6 millimetres fell Friday, when the previous record was 27.6 millimetres set in 1982. Beaverlodge also saw a record of 22 millimetres, passing the 2003 record of 7.8 millimetres.

A rainfall warning for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyiew and the Peace River – Fairview – High Prairie – Manning regions has ended. Environment Canada says 40 to 86 millimetres of rain has fallen in the last 36 hours.
