New home construction in Grande Prairie was down by more than half last month. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation says work started on 11 new homes in the city in June, down from 26 in June 2017.
All 11 of the housing starts were single-family homes, while a year ago there were 20 of those and six multiple unit buildings. It brings the year-to-date total to 51, down 42 per cent from 88 after the first half of 2017.
In the County of Grande Prairie, things are up. There were 76 housing starts in the second quarter of the year, which is exactly what was seen a year ago.
However, the spread of new builds is much different. Between April and June 2017, work started on 64 new single-family homes and 12 multiple family ones. This year, there have been 34 single-family housing starts and 42 multi-units.
Year-to-date, construction has begun on 100 new homes in the County, 59 of them for a single family and 42 for multiple. At this point last year there had been 80 single and 12 multiple.
