Western Alberta unemployment rate up for third month

The unemployment rate for western Alberta has increased for the third straight month. The economic region that stretches from Banff to Peace River sat at 6.7 per cent last month, up from 6.5 in May and 6.3 in June 2017.

The country’s unemployment rate also pushed higher. Statistics Canada reports the rate jumped 0.2 per cent to six per cent in June.

Overall, 31,800 jobs were added, with the majority of them part-time. About 76,000 Canadians were looking for jobs. Alberta saw an increase as well, jumping from 6.2 per cent in May to 6.5 per cent in June.
