Deadline for cannabis retail applications Friday afternoon

Potential cannabis retailers have until 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon to get their applications into the City of Grande Prairie. City council will only allow 15 business licences to be issued in the first year of legalization, and anywhere between 17 and 22 applicants are expected.

If that’s the case, a lottery will be held on Monday, July 9th. Only one licence will be given out per corporate entity, which the City says is meant to “promote diverse ownership opportunities.” Their bylaws will be reviewed after a year.

Once marijuana is legalized on October 17, 2018, stores in Grande Prairie will be allowed to be open from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. As per provincial guidelines, they must also be at least 100 metres away from schools and provincial health care facilities.

Consumers will be limited to 30 grams of cannabis per transaction, which is also the legal public possession limit. Online sales and home delivery will only be available through a single website operated by the AGLC at albertacannabis.org.
