Dawson Creek Hospital to undergo redevelopment

The B.C. Government is redeveloping the Dawson Creek and District Hospital. Minister of Health Adrian Dix announced Wednesday that the province has approved the concept plan, meaning the project can go ahead.

“This day has been a long, long, long time coming. Our government approved this project so patients can receive public health-care services in updated, state-of-the-art surroundings. The South Peace region, its patients and health-care workers deserves nothing less.”

The facility will get a new inpatient building, a bigger emergency department, modernized operating rooms, and more beds. It first opened in 1960 and has been considered as a priority for renewal since 2008.

“We’re so pleased to receive this announcement from the Province of B.C. that commits to improvements to our facility, services and care of patients at Dawson Creek and District Hospital,” says Northern Health board chair Colleen Nyce. “This project will support our pledge to take a person and family-centred approach to everything we do in a modern and up-to-date setting.

The next stage will be a business plan to finalize details, which should take 12 to 18 months. Construction isn’t expected to start until early 2021.
