Another block downtown to close for construction

The next road closure downtown Grande Prairie starts Thursday. City crews will be shutting down 100 Avenue between 100 Street and 101 Street to remove street lights, garbage cans, bike racks, and flower planters to prep for road work on that block.

100 Avenue is already closed from 101 Street to 102 Street. Monty Haughian with the City of Grande Prairie says it won’t affect traffic much more than the current detour.

“100 Street north and southbound will not be affected, and 101 Street north and southbound will not be affected. But, the avenue itself will have no through traffic; it will be totally closed and fenced the same as 101 Street to 102 Street.”

Haughian says drivers need to know they can’t go west on 100 Avenue from 100 Street. Instead, they can use 102 Avenue or 108 Avenue to get around until construction is done.

“That closure from 100 Street to 101 Street is basically to the end of construction season,” Haughian explains. “October 15th is what we’re shooting for.”

The intersection of 102 Street and 100 Avenue is also fully closed, causing major disruptions to traffic. Drivers can only get across the city westbound using 116 Avenue, 108 Avenue, 84 Avenue, and 68 Avenue. That should take another two to three weeks.

All downtown businesses remain open.
