Wildfire danger now high

The heat wave has increased the risk of a wildfire sparking in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. Alberta Wildfire says the wildfire danger for the region is now high.

Wildfire information officer Kelly Burke says dead grass and other fuel in the forest is drying out, making it more likely for a human-caused wildfire to spark. Warmer temperatures will continue to dry out fuels in the forest areas.

“Use extreme caution if you are using an off-highway vehicle and take the time to check for debris that may be caught up on your machines very hot exhaust systems,” urges Burke.

Residents are reminded that the fine for abandoning campfires or using fireworks and exploding targets in forested areas can be up to $287. Campfires should extinguished by soaking them, stirring them, and soaking them again.
