Sexsmith opens new farmers’ market

The new farmers’ market in Sexsmith has officially opened. Located in the Sexsmith Curling Club, the Sexsmith Farmers’ Market will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays until mid-September.

The idea was originally brought to town council, and from there resident Melody Sample was hired as manager. She says she’s heard a lot of demand.

“We had started last year asking the community, and it came back as a resounding yes. They definitely wanted a farmers’ market; they want a place to come get their vegetables and their meat and their eggs and their breads.”

As of opening day, there are 29 vendors at the market offering everything from produce, meat, and honey to artisan crafts. There are still openings for more. Sample says the hope is the market will become a meeting place for the community on their way home from work.

“We really envision a gathering place for the community, someplace that you can meet your friends down here, you can bring your family, we’ve got a kids corner.”

The town will support the market initially, but long-term plans are still up in the air. To celebrate the grand opening, it has brought in food trucks and will have pumpkin plants for children to bring home provided by Braeheid Gardens.
