Smoke detectors alert family to basement fire

Everyone made it out safely from a fire in Royal Oaks Wednesday night. The Grande Prairie Fire Department was called just after 7 p.m. and found a fire in the basement of the home.

Firefighters were able to stop it from spreading to the rest of the home, and it was brought under control within 20 minutes. Thanks to working smoke alarms, five people in the home at the time and three pets were able to evacuate before the fire department arrived.

“The Grande Prairie Fire Department recommends you have a working smoke detector on every level of your home and in each bedroom,” it says in a release. “Early fire detection buys you time so that you can evacuate safely.”

However, one dog couldn’t be found due to smoke. Firefighters were able to rescue it shortly after they got there. It was given medical help and is in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
