World's Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics rolling into Grande Prairie

A unique fundraiser for Special Olympics athletes is making its way to Grande Prairie for the first time later this month.

Law Enforcement Torch Run organizes the annual World’s Largest Truck Convoy, which brings together truckers and law enforcement to raise funds for local competitors.

Chairperson Shirley Norton says it’s a natural fit for the Swan City.

“Without our truck drivers, we would not exist the way we do here in Grande Prairie; we generate a lot of cash from them and they support everything that we do. With these athletes, they have a huge heart and they’re looking forward to our help and looking forward to the convoy, and I think it’s just a great mix between the two of the energies.”

The city is also hosting the 2015 Winter Games.

Hundred of trucks will make their way in a loop from Ritchie Brothers on Range Road 51, west on 68th Ave, north on 116th Street, and back over on Highway 43 for a barbecue.

Norton hopes to see the community come out to cheer on the drivers, and make them honk their horn.

“I encourage everybody to get involved and support these drivers and bring out their posters and banners and stand along 68th Avenue. They’re taking their time out of a very, very busy day, and a very, very busy time, and I can’t thank the drivers enough for participating.”

It was announced Wednesday that Formula Powell is supporting the upcoming event with a $10,000 donation.
