Residents asked not to litter after alarming May collection stats

The spring cleaning is definitely underway in Grande Prairie.

Parks staff have been picking up litter around the city and in one two week span, nearly 30,000 pounds of garbage was collected.

The city says that total is more than what was collected in all of May 2017. Last year’s May total also includes all of the neighbourhood association pickups and the City Scrub.

In one day alone more than 10,000 pounds of trash was collected. That was picked up along Highway 43 west of Costco to the city limits.

Some businesses and residents are trying to do their part. A few local establishments are forgoing plastic straws. In April Maurissa Heitland proposed a plastic bag ban to City Council. The idea was referred to a standing committee for more information.

The city is asking everyone to work together to keep the community clean.
