Alternative high school opens in Community Knowledge Campus

Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools has quietly opened a new high school in the Community Knowledge Campus this week.

Board Chair Eldon Wyant explains St. John Bosco south campus is an alternative school for students that may have schedules or learning needs that conflict with a traditional school setting.

“It could be kids that have decided that they’re going to work part-time and the hours of a regular school don’t necessarily fit with their activities. Also those that might be involved in high level sports programs and that sort of thing.”

The self-based learning school has flexible hours and more one-on-one attention, suited for students returning to get credits for graduation or those with learning disabilities.

The school is open to all students in the community, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

A similar program has been running out of the district office for years, but it was moved to make it more accessible by transit.

The second phase of the campus will open next April with a skills centre.
