Safety urged after report of girl being followed after school

Parents are being encouraged to speak with their children about safety walking to and from school following an incident reported Wednesday afternoon. In a public Facebook post, a parent said her daughter had been approached by someone in a rusty black car as she rode her bike home from Roy Bickell Public School in Royal Oaks.

The girl was reportedly able to get away safely and hid behind a nearby house. A letter issued by nearby St. Catherine Catholic School late Wednesday night confirmed the RCMP have been notified, but have not spoken to anyone other than the family of the girl.

“While we do not know the circumstances, we wanted to share this information with you so you may speak with your children about safe walking procedures and so our community can be aware and support our students tomorrow morning.”

The school says teachers will be asked to have similar conversations with their students. We have reached out to Grande Prairie RCMP for more information.
