UPDATE: Heat warning ended for Grande Prairie

UPDATE: The Heat warning has ended for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview. Environment Canada has continued the heat warning for other areas of the Peace Region. That includes Woking, Spirit River and Fairview. The forecast does include some possible showers Thursday and Friday.

A heat warning has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region. Environment Canada says a building upper ridge over Alberta will bring temperature highs reaching near 29 degrees or more, and minimum overnight lows near 14 degrees.

That’s expected to last through to Thursday evening. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected for some parts of the province on Friday. In Grande Prairie, the forecast is calling for a high of 30 degrees Wednesday, and 29 degrees Thursday, dropping to 23 degrees on Friday.

Environment Canada urges people to keeping any time outside to the cooler parts of the day, making sure to take frequent breaks from the heat indoors, drinking plenty of water, and not leaving any person or pet inside a closed vehicle for any amount of time.

Residents should also be watching for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Those include a high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness. The most vulnerable people are children, seniors, people with pre-existing conditions, outdoor workers, and people who are socially isolated.
