Lightning sparks eight wildfires

Eight wildfires were sparked by lightning this weekend in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. Four are still burning, and crews are working to put them out. Based on the weather and resources available, they are not expected to grow past predetermined boundaries.

The wildfire danger for the area is still moderate. However, wildfire information officer Kelly Burke reminds residents that lightning fires are common this time of year.

“It’s important now to be extra careful with fire and limit the number of human caused wildfires. Never leave your campfire unattended and carry firefighting equipment when traveling in the forest. We need all our resources available to fight natural lightning-caused fires.”

Since the start of wildfire season on March 1st, there have been 15 wildfires sparked in the region. They have burned a total of five hectares of land.
