Police Dog Freda tracks down theft suspect

A local police dog has been a very good girl. Four year old Freda was instrumental in taking a theft suspect into custody earlier this year, and is getting praised for her role in the arrest.

On February 27th, Valleyview RCMP were looking for two people believed to have stolen a quad from a home in the rural area. One fled from police on the quad and the other in a vehicle.

Grande Prairie Police Dog Services responded and Freda found the stolen quad abandoned. She was then able to track down one of the men who ran into a wooded area. Another police dog services unit was able to find the second suspect on the roof of a mobile home, and both were taken into custody.

“Police service dogs like Freda play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of the communities we serve by being actively engaged in investigations and proactive patrols,” RCMP say in a release. “Freda and our other canine members receive an immense amount of training with their handlers in order to tackle a variety of crimes including property thefts. Police Service Dogs are routinely used to target and apprehend prolific property crime offenders who hurt our communities the most.”
