Highway 43 bypass lane closed due to damage

After an accident Sunday morning, one eastbound lane of the Highway 43 bypass at Highway 2 will remain closed for several months.

Jasmine Franklin with Alberta Transportation says the outside lane was closed after a northbound truck carrying an excavator struck the underside of the overpass.

“We had an inspection done a few days ago, and that found there was significant damage done. The steel girder was bent, and that’s created cracks on the deck on the overpass, so while it’s still structurally sound, we have closed down that one lane.”

Traffic can still use the bypass, but it will be reduced to single lane traffic.

Franklin could not confirm who gets stuck with the repair bill.
