Extensive flooding prompts Hythe state of local emergency

A state of local emergency has been declared in Hythe due to extensive flooding. According to an Alberta Emergency Alert, village council made the decision Friday night as crews deal with the rapid snow melt in the West Industrial Area and the Willowgrove mobile home subdivision.

A state of local emergency is meant to give municipal governments the power needed to address an emergency. They can also borrow any money necessary to pay for services provided by the provincial or federal governments.

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership says pumping is being done to alleviate some of the flooding. Parents are asked to keep their children away from the hoses, and residents are asked to avoid flooded areas.
