City considering ban on consumer fireworks in Grande Prairie

The city is looking a passing a bylaw that would ban the use and sale of consumer fireworks in Grande Prairie.

The Canadian National Fireworks Association, however, is trying to talk them out of it.

Executive Director Dominique Allen says a better way to prevent irresponsible use of fireworks is to keep them legal, and educate those who would use them.

“That’s why when you have a permissive bylaw you have retailers that talk to their customers and help them pick products that are right for their property. So learning to be safe with fireworks is not that difficult, it’s more about making sure people have the opportunity to learn”

In a survey conducted by the CFNA, 71 per cent of Grande Prairie residents polled said they should have the right to choose where they use legal fireworks, however 64 per cent said they did not think they should be used on private property.

According to the Alberta Fire Commissioner’s Office, over the last 10 years, Alberta has had upwards of 90 fires caused by consumer fireworks.

Fire Chief Dan Lemieux says Grande Prairie has never had a major loss from a fireworks ignited blaze.
