Summer Games putting out urgent call for volunteers

The 2018 Alberta Summer Games are less than three months away and they are putting out the call for more volunteers. About 2,000 will be needed in total and currently they have about 400.

Games Manager Lindsey McNeil says they do have a Volunteer Coordinator that is hard at work. She says they will be out and about in the community this week sharing information and looking to sign people up.

“We have a lot of booths coming up. We’re at Canadian Tire and we’re at the mall this week, we’ll have some at Save-on-Foods. Anybody who is interested in volunteering but isn’t really sure how they want to go about it they are more than welcome to call our office or come see us at one of those booths.”

They are looking to fill a variety of positions ahead of the games. McNeil says they are currently working to fill a lot of security positions.

“No training is really required. We will train people. But a criminal background check is required. There’s probably 300 that are needed specifically for that role. In addition to that, anybody that is interested in driving courtesy vehicles we are in great need of people who are willing to do that.”

They are focused on filling food services positions as well. More than 2900 athletes will be served breakfast, lunch and dinner during the games.

McNeil says volunteers need to over the age of 13 to help out unsupervised but she adds kids are welcome to join their parents if they would like to volunteer.

“We think it’s a great opportunity for everybody to be involved and we’d love to see the young people be involved too.”

The games just marked being 100 days out from the games earlier this month. They will run July 19 to 22 and will feature 13 different sports.
