Western Alberta unemployment rate still on decline

The unemployment rate in western Alberta continues to drop. It was 5.1 per cent in the region that houses Grande Prairie last month, down from 5.3 in February. It was 7.8 a year ago.

Alberta overall also saw a decline. The unemployment rate in March 2018 was 6.3 per cent, a full two percentage points lower than March 2017 and 0.4 per cent lower than this February.

More full-time job opportunities are also opening up across Canada. The March jobs report from Statistics Canada shows more than 32,000 new jobs added across the country.

Full-time jobs jumped to 68,300, but that number was offset by a loss of 35,900 part-time positions. Average hourly
wages increased by 0.2 per cent to 3.3 per cent.
