New conflict of interest rules apply to GPRC president

The president of Grande Prairie Regional College is one of the 54 top executives covered under Alberta’s new conflict of interest rules. Bill 27 holds the heads of Alberta’s agencies, boards and commissions to the same ethical standards as elected officials.

Finance Minister Joe Ceci says they will be subject to rules around publicly traded securities and limits to gifts.

“Appointees designated in this order will now have to disclose their financial information and direct associates,” explains Minister of Finance Joe Ceci. “These changes are about giving Albertans total confidence that their government is working for them, not friends and political insiders.”

The Conflicts of Interest Act also stops the executives from taking certain jobs within 12 months of working for a public agency. The new requirements apply immediately to new appointees and there will be a transition period of up to two years for incumbents, including GPRC President & CEO Don Gnatiuk.
