Police pursuit ends in South Bear Creek Park

A tip about open liquor in a vehicle sparked a police chase Saturday that ended on the south side of Grande Prairie. RCMP say they received a complaint late Saturday afternoon about a man drinking in a vehicle in the parking lot of a liquor store.

When police attempted to make an arrest they allege the driver became violent and fled the scene. RCMP didn’t follow the vehicle at that time. The car was then reportedly involved in a crash near Kateri Drive before continuing to drive “erratically” around town.

According to police the vehicle was located a second time again in a parking lot. RCMP say the driver refused to stop almost striking a cruiser head on. Police then pursued the vehicle along 84 Avenue, Resources Road and then 68 Avenue.

Despite deflating the drivers tires the vehicle continued in to the South Bear Creek Park area. The vehicle ended up in a snowbank when police say the driver attempted to climb out the sunroof and make a run for it.

After what RCMP call “a brief altercation” the suspect was taken into custody. A 47 year-old Grande Prairie man is facing 16 charges and is scheduled to appear in court Monday. Police say nobody was injured.
