No public risk from Baytree H2S release

Spirit River RCMP are assuring the public there is no need for concern after an H2S release from a gas plant north west of Baytree. The leak was reported just after 1:30 p.m. Friday, but emergency personnel were able to figure out it was an isolated incident that didn’t present an ongoing safety or health concern.

Police say the monitoring equipment on site show there is no H2S in the air at this time, and that levels never reached higher than 10 parts per million. Calls from residents concerned about the need to be evacuated or take precautions have been coming in, but mounties say there is no ongoing release or risk to public safety.

Should that change, all affected residents would be contacted directly, according to industry Emergency Response Plans. There’s no word yet on the cause or initial effect of the release.
