Former district commander named RCMP commissioner

The appointment of Brenda Lucki as the RCMP’s new commissioner is being celebrated locally. Mayor Bill Given worked with Lucki during her time as district commander of the RCMP’s Western Alberta District out of Grande Prairie.

He says that while there’s often a perception that leaders in organizations like the RCMP are detached from what’s happening on the ground, he felt she understood the needs of communities.

“I know that just in the last couple of years she was very much involved in the needs of local communities in the Grande Prairie region, so it’s great to know that somebody at the highest level understands exactly at the ground level in communities like Grande Prairie.”

Lucki was appointed district commander in 2013, and has served as the Commanding Officer of Depot Division since she left in 2016. Given believes Lucki is highly qualified, and says the RCMP are “absolutely in good hands” under her watch.

“I believe that she is committed to ensuring that the force is responsive and modern, and everything that we saw from her time here in Grande Prairie suggests that she’s committed to those principles.”

Lucki was named Canada’s first permanent female commissioner of the RCMP by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Friday. She officially takes up her post on April 16th.

“She is an exceptional leader who is known for being a hard worker, a dedicated officer, and someone who is constantly looking for ways to improve the status quo,” says Trudeau. “We look forward to working with her to help keep all Canadians safe.”
