Grande Prairie under winter storm warning

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region. Environment Canada says 15 to 25 centimetres of snow is expected to fall by Saturday morning, causing hazardous conditions.

The forecast is calling for an intense weather system to start pushing snow into west central area late Wednesday night, with heavy snow expected to continue Thursday and Friday as it slowly moves east. The heaviest amounts should fall near the B.C. border.

Along with the snow, strong wind is also expected, and the blowing snow could reduce visibility in open areas and exposed highways. Conditions are expected to improve Saturday.

Environment Canada warns that the rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult in some parts. Residents are encouraged to postpone any non-essential travel, and to put together an emergency kit and plan.
