AGLC adjusting serving times for bronze medal game

Bars and restaurants around Alberta will be allowed to serve alcohol during Saturday’s bronze medal hockey game but it looks like only one Grande Prairie bar will be opening.

Maddhatters took to their social media account to gauge the public interest. Early Friday afternoon 77 per cent of respondents were in favour of the early hours. Partner Derek Moe says when they opened the doors for the 2014 gold medal game it was a full house.

“Everybody is cheering for the same team so that’s always a fun thing. The energy in the building, to be able to watch the game with 200-150 people, cheering for the same team, on the edge of their seat the whole time; it’s mind blowing.”

The AGLC sent out an email to establishments around the province before the games began letting them know that they would again allow the sale of liquor around Alberta during the early hours of Saturday.

The puck drops at 5:10 a.m. so according to AGLC guidelines doors can open at 4:30 a.m. with liquor service allowed to being at 5:00 a.m. Moe says they will still have a last call and close the doors briefly early Saturday just like in 2014.

“There was people lined up in the parking lot waiting as we had the janitors do a quick sweep and reset. We had people banging on the door waiting to come in.”

Via telephone other major bars in the city said they would not be open for the early game.
