The federal government is investing nearly $2 million into the town of peace river. The province of Alberta will also be matching the grant which will be used to build walls to protect from rock and mudslides.
The funding will also be used for repairs to underground infrastructure in the area. Slides were discovered near 99 street in the summer of 2016 while the town was considering the area for possible future development.
Cracks were noticed near 99 street in 2016 when the town was looking at developing the area. The wet summer that followed led to slides in the area which impacted unground water infrastructure and posed a threat to neighbouring businesses and residents.
