Grande Prairie reminded to prep for wildfire season March 1st

Although the technical end of winter is still a month away, wildfire season in Alberta is fast approaching. The province is reminding people in the Grande Prairie area to check their winter burn piles before it beings on March 1st.

Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke explains that it’s common for there to be deep layers of soil in the region.

“This organic material may ignite under debris piles and smolder during the winter months. Wildfires like these are sleeping giants, waiting to takeoff when dry grasses are available to carry them on windy spring days.”

Anyone with concerns about their burn sites is encouraged to contact the Grande Prairie Wildfire Center at 780-538-5560. Alberta moved its official start to wildfire season up a month in 2017, due to drier winters over the past few years.
