UPDATED: Snowfall warning ended for Grande Prairie region

UPDATE: Environment Canada ended the snowfall waning for Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region early Saturday morning.

A snowfall warning has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region. On top of the more than 25 centimetres of snow Grande Prairie has seen over the past three days, Environment Canada says 20 to 30 more centimetres are expected to fall by Saturday morning.

The forecast is calling for heavy snow to develop Thursday night over parts of western Alberta, sticking around for Friday before tapering off. The Hinton – Grande Cache and Whitecourt – Edson – Fox Creek – Swan Hills areas are also affected by the weather warning, which is likely to be expanded.

Residents are asked to reconsider non-essential travel until conditions improve. Driving could be difficult due to snow build up.

The City of Grande Prairie says with the heavy snowfall, windrow removal on priority two routes may take a few weeks. Crews continue to work non-stop until all main roads and transit routes are plowed.

Once all windrows on priority two routes are removed, piles of snow and windrows in residential areas will be removed. Residential snow removal crews will be clearing snow from Royal Oaks, Northridge, Lakeland, Crystal Lake Estates, Copperwood, Arbour Hills and Crystal Ridge Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
