Extreme cold warning issued for Peace country

An extreme cold warning has been issued for the Peace country and much of Alberta. Multiple days of very cold wind chills are expected in the region.

Environment Canada says an Arctic airmass moving south over the province will lead to extreme cold conditions tonight, lasting until the weekend. The cold temperatures combined with wind will mean a windchill of minus 40 or colder.

Residents are warned to watch for cold-related symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. People should make sure to cover up, as frostbite can develop on exposed skin within minutes. Outdoor workers are also recommended to take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.

The forecast for Grande Prairie is calling for clouds Wednesday night with a chance of snow. With the wind, the low of minus 33 will turn into an extreme wind chill of minus 43.
